Race Time Predictor

Have you ever wondered what time that you should run for a certain distance, even though you have not run that distance yet? Well, try the calculator below to give you an idea.

This calculator lets you input an actual race time to see what you should be capable of at another distance. It is adjusted for distance (ie its 10K prediction isn't just double your 5K time), there are two main points to note:

  1. This assumes that you have done sufficient training for the distance that you wish the calculation for. For example just because you have just run a 22 minute 5km today, does not mean you can just go out tomorrow and run a 3:30 marathon. Obvious really!!
  2. This also assumes that you do not have a natural significant ability more towards either speed or endurance. Some people, no matter how much training they do, will always achieve better results at either speed or endurance events.

The formula above which was originally devised by Pete Riegel, a research engineer and marathoner, is highly regarded as accurate, and is widely used to guage if runners have weak times over certain events.

The formula is T2 = T1 x (D2/D1)1.06 where T1 is the given time, D1 is the given distance, D2 is the distance to predict a time for, and T2 is the calculated time for D2.

Simple really :-)
